Celebrate the Rule of Law on May 1

April 29, 2011

May 1 is “Law Day,” first recognized in a proclamation by Pres. Dwight Eisenhower in 1958 (Proclamation No. 3268) and later enacted by a Joint Resolution of Congress [P.L. 87-20 (1961)].

The theme from the American Bar Association for Law Day 2011 is “The Legacy of John Adams:  From the Boston Massacre to Guantanamo,”  which examines the historical and contemporary roles that lawyers exercise in defending the rights of the accused.

You can read more about the legacy of John Adams and other lawyer Presidents.  For example, America’s Lawyer Presidents:  From Law Office to Oval Office, includes entries on both John Adams and his son, John Quincy Adams.  The Boston Massacre, by Frederic Kidder, includes details of the event and the following trial, with unpublished documents of John Adams.
