Memorial Day, May 30

May 25, 2011

On Monday, May 30, we’ll be observing Memorial Day and the library will be closed.  Memorial Day is a federal holiday; for a list of federal holidays see 5 U.S.C. §6103.

Memorial Day was first observed in 1868 by order of Maj. Gen. John Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic to honor soldiers on both sides who had died in the Civil War.  The first observance was held at Arlington National Cemetery, where both Confederate and Union soldiers were buried.

For more on Memorial Day, visit the Library of Congress American Memory Project’s Today in History.
